There is no doubt in this writer’s mind that Clara Datre is in a league of her own. She was elected to the board of directors of the Long Island Builders Institute as secretary. In four years she will become the president. She is the wife of Tom Datre and his partner in their building business. Clara was once a school teacher and for the last 20 years has been an integral part of LIBI. A year ago, she ran for supervisor of Islip and lost but apparently the “bug” took over and compelled her to get into action of the LIBI board. Her story is quite unusual since no other woman has progressed in such a way on Long Island. Yet there are some instances where women have become presidents of the locals in the tri-state region and three of these women have gone on to become presidents of their state builder associations. Across this country there are many instances when women break through the glass ceiling in the home building business even though there is strong opposition from builders within the various chapters. We didn’t want to “go there” in the Clara Datre case because it would serve very little to anyone. Clara got on the ladder and I’m sure she will perform very well in the years to come.
Congratulations to Clara and all the other women who are making it in the industry.
